stage tech

The West High Stage Tech program consists of a large production crew that works diligently to put together all Company West productions. Specifically, the program focuses on the Theatre III Fall Mainstage Production and the Musical Theatre III Spring Musical, although they also help produce the Theatre I, II and Musical Theatre II performances.
There are six main crews for each production:

  • Stage managers

  • Costumes

  • Set construction

  • Props/paint

  • Business

  • Light, Sound and Projection/Media

Each crew specializes in a specific technical elements necessary for the production. For example, the Costume crew focuses on the clothes and accessories of actors, and the Business crew focuses on promotion and finances.

While these crews work separately towards their own crew goals, students cross-train and work alongside other crews, the actors, the directors, and the Stage Managers for their shows. Students in the Technical Theatre program also learn how to overcome challenges, work with their mistakes, and bring to life their creative vision for the look of the productions. The Tech program gives students the opportunity to learn more about theatre productions and the work that goes on behind-the-scene, make new friends and find new connections in the production world, and express their innovative and creative ideas through the production of a play or musical.

The Stage Managers keep the productions afloat. They facilitate communication across all creative and technical departments; act as a right hand to the director; oversee sets, props, lights, and sound; and call all technical cues during performances.

Set, PROPS, PAINT

The set, props, and paint crew use a combination of creativity and practicality to make the production come to life. The props crew specifically researches, fabricates, and finds all necessary props, things that are picked up, used, or set for a show. The set crew uses innovative and unique thinking to bring these designs to reality. The paint crew works with the director to design a painting plan, including colour and texture. All three of these crews work together interchangeably.

Costume

The costume crew is responsible for choosing all the costumes for each production. The crew assists actors with their costumes and quick-change needs during technical rehearsals and performances as well as with basic maintenance of the costumes during the production. The crew also assists in makeup and hair needs for the production.
